LOCAL SENIORS FIND THEIR STEADINESS THROUGH
FALLPROOF™ BALANCE AND MOBILITY PROGRAM


CLAREMONT, Calif., October 14, 2009 – The Joslyn Senior Center (660 North Mountain Avenue, Claremont) proudly introduces the FallProof™ Balance and Mobility Program, a community program designed to educate seniors on the tools to help reduce fall risks, while increasing their confidence and independence.

“The FallProof program is an important part of our senior communities’ well-being,” said Inter Valley Health Plan president and CEO Ronald H. Bolding. “As a proponent of senior vitality, we stand behind the FallProof program and its ideologies.”

The FallProof program is subsidized by the City of Claremont and Inter Valley Health Plan (www.IVHP.com), a Pomona-based Medicare Advantage Organization, and developed by the Center for Successful Aging at California State University – Fullerton. The program addresses multiple balance and mobility factors, making everyday life safer for seniors by increasing their knowledge of risk factors, which helps to prevent falls resulting in injuries and also promoting daily movement. The program further reverses and compensates for impairments that are associated with people as they age, such as improving postural alignment, walking, integration of sensory information, recovery from temporary loss of balance, as well as practicing challenging movements in a safe environment.

“The feedback from our FallProof students has been great!” said Melissa Vollaro, human services superintendent for the Claremont Joslyn Center. “We have graduated students who have said the class has helped them be more aware of their surroundings and has given them much more confidence in their daily activities. In fact, one student said the class helped her so much that she comes back just to mentor new students!”

The FallProof program includes access to a broad range of specialized equipment, and includes pre- and post-assessment/ interval testing, multisensory, center of gravity control and postural strategy, gait pattern enhancement and variation, strength and flexibility training, balance drills to improve coordination, shifting body correctly up/down stairs, getting up/out of bed or chair, and more.

The 10-week beginner-level FallProof class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and an advanced class meets on Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m. Special pricing is available to Inter Valley Health Plan members. The Claremont Senior Program is run by the Human Services Department of the City of Claremont. Programs are housed primarily out of the Joslyn Center located at 660 North Mountain Avenue, and the Blaisdell Center located at 440 South College Avenue in Claremont.
