Exercise Your Body To Keep Your Brain Healthy

Research has shown that people who exercise into their later years improve the health of their bodies and also their minds. Physical exercise helps maintain blood flow to the brain and encourages the growth of new brain cells. It can also significantly reduce the risk factors for Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

Some benefits of exercise
2 People exercising
  • Exercise affects many sites within the nervous system and sets off pleasure chemicals in our brains, such as serotonin and dopamine, that make us feel calm, happy, and euphoric.
  • Exercise has been shown to help prevent many diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and some cancers.
  • Weight-bearing activities such as dancing, yoga, tai chi, or even golf can help improve balance and flexibility, increase muscle power, and strengthen bones.
  • Aerobic exercises, for example, swimming, cycling, dancing, or walking have all been shown to be beneficial in improving memory.
Inter Valley Health Plan includes a gym benefit for members — so that you can stay physically active and maintain/improve your brain health. Call 800-251-8191 and ask for the Member Services department for more information about your gym benefits.
