Keys to living on your own & staying in your home


The Center for Disease Control defines aging in place as “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.”

Here are keys that can help unlock the confidence you need to take charge, manage living on your own and stay in your home.

Guard your Health
  • Eat healthy, nutritious food, get plenty of quality rest.
  • Exercise daily to keep your body healthy. There are exercises you can do at any age with almost any disability or health condition.
  • Take medications consistently as directed and vitamins to maintain optimum health.
  • Exercise your mind, by playing brain games, such as crossword puzzles or Sudoku, or other activities that keep your mind sharp and alert.
  • Be social, be active, meet new people and try new things. Attend one of our Vitality.
Get Organized
  • Develop a system in your home that keeps you organized. Having fixed locations for storing important items like keys, wallets, purses, appointment cards and medications can keep you from endless searching.
  • Establish a schedule that makes it easy to keep routine chores like shopping, appointments, and visits stress-free.
  • Keep your appointments and important phone numbers on a calendar in a central location in your home.
  • Keep the medical records that show past medical history like procedures, tests and illnesses up to date and in one place. 

                                                         

 
 Be Prepared
  • Keep back-up supplies (batteries, flashlights, blankets, matches, etc) easily reachable.Establish a schedule that makes it easy to keep routine chores like shopping, appointments, and visits stress-free.
  •  Keep a spare pair of glasses in a safe place.
  • Keep your freezer and pantry well-stocked. Surplus paper supplies and bottled water can help give you confidence that you are ready for anything from bad weather to a bad cold.
  • Use a landline telephone.

    
  Stay Safe 
  • Get to know your neighbors and their routines. This will help you be aware of any unusual changes in the neighborhood— and your neighbors in turn—will keep an eye on you, too. Keep a spare pair of glasses in a safe place.
  • Keep a record of all the medications you take to prevent any medical emergencies.

  • Install reliable locks or a security system.

  • Wear an emergency pendent that alerts help if you fall or require medical assistance.
